8/12: METEOR MADNESS WITH DR. SKY | One of the year’s best meteor showers, the Perseids, will light up the sky this week, and one of the best places to watch it is a short drive away. Steve Kates, aka Dr. Sky, says city dwellers may see a few meteors an hour from their backyard, but they could see 80 an hour from Lost Dutchman State Park. This South Carolina-bred comic first earned attention when he was arrested for dancing in the end zone during a Carolina Panthers game. Since then he’s been a spokesman for Dodge, recognized for the catchphrase “That thing got a Hemi?” He also won the fifth season of “Last Comic Standing” and has more recently been seen on “Eastbound and Down.”

8/14-30: ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’
Valley Youth Theatre brings Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, the biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors, to the stage. Known for its family-friendly story line, bright colors and catchy tunes, “Joseph” is set to country, pop and rock-and-roll styles for such numbers as “Any Dream Will Do” and “Close Every Door.”

This comic and actress, born Lori Ann Rambough, is a familiar face to stand-up fans. She has appeared in numerous films and TV shows, including “The Hughleys”
and “Soul Plane.” She also has been on numerous stand-up specials, such as “Showtime at the Apollo” and “Def Comedy Jam.” But she’s best known as one of the Queens of Comedy, along with Mo’Nique, Laura Hayes and Adele Givens.

It’s the mellow side of ’70s pop-rock, with founding members Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley revisiting the close harmonies and flowing melodies found in such tracks as “I Need You,” “Ventura Highway” and “Lonely People.” The group’s last Top 10 hit, the breezy “You Can Do Magic,” arrived in 1982.

Classically trained dancers performing choreography with a contemporary edge is the mission of Convergence Ballet Company, an upstart troupe led by artistic director Jennifer Cafarella, who grew up in the Valley and danced with such companies as Portland Ballet in Maine and José Mateo Ballet Theatre in Boston.

One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, now go, cat, go to celebrate the “King of Rock and Roll.” In honor of Elvis Presley, the museum will offer an Elvis-inspired exhibit, gallery talks, activities and a screening of “Jailhouse Rock.”

Jazz sensation Esperanza Spaulding, who took home a Grammy for best new artist in 2011, draws on her childhood love of theater, poetry and movement in a multimedia production said to unfold as live musical vignettes. As Spalding explains, “We will be staging the songs as much as we play them, using characters, video and the movement of our bodies.”

The top five stars of “American Idol” Season 14 take the stage to showcase their winning performances.
