9/1-4: Coconino County Fair

Enjoy the fair as it was meant to be, with kids showing off their livestock and adults eating as much pie and/or watermelon as they can in a finite time. There’s plenty of fun between 4-H auctions and eating contests, with live music, carnival rides, a demolition derby and a plethora of foods on sticks.

9/2-4: Showdown in Tombstone

Immerse yourself in showdowns, shootouts and everything else that made the west so wild. Deputies, outlaws are among the trigger-happy characters stepping straight out of the 1880s and into tourist-friendly Tombstone. Various gunfighting groups will put on free shows, and there also will be a costume contest and parade.

9/2: Dragonfly Walk

Learn about these elegant predators during a narrated walk at Boyce Thompson Arboretum Ayer's Lake. Bring your camera for snapshots as guides net the insects before before releasing them unharmed.

Through 9/2: Flashlight Tours at the Desert Botanical Garden 

Come hear, see and even feel what the nighttime desert has to offer during a self-paced walk through Desert Botanical Garden. Visitors may bring along their own flashlights or buy one in the Garden Shop.

9/3: Free Mesa museum admissions

The Arizona Museum of Natural History and the i.d.e.a. Museum in Mesa are offering free admissions. Explore dinosaurs or pan for gold at the natural history museum, explore your imagination through design, art and technology at the i.d.e.a. museum.

Through 9/3: Free admission for military families at i.d.e.a Museum

A look inside the i.d.e.a. Museum in Mesa Wochit

The i.d.e.a. Museum is providing free admission to active-duty military families through the Blue Stars Museums program. Active-duty military personnel and up to five family members receive free admission with the following identification: Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID) or DD Form 1173-1 ID card.

Through 9/3: Great Arizona Puppet Theater shows

Gwen Bonar grew up around puppets and theater. Her parents founded the Great Arizona Puppet Theater, which purchased the historic church they operate out of in 1996. Now Bonar is a puppeteer and the Assistant Artistic Director. Kayla Samoy/The Republic

This non-profit puppet theater puts on shows year-round. Through Aug. 13, the theater performs "Rumpelstiltskin." From Aug. 16 to Sept. 3, look for a musical version of "The Three Billy Goats Gruff."

9/4: Butterfly Wonderland celebration

Ongoing: Sea's Life 'Colorado River Adventure' 

The Arizona Sea Life Aquarium opened a new exhibit Friday, May 19, 2017. The $1 million Colorado River Adventure exhibit was greeted by a parade of children dressed as sea animals and the Mayor of Tempe, Mark Mitchell. Tom Tingle/

Sea Life Arizona opened a $1 million outdoor exhibit that follows the Colorado River from the Rocky Mountains to the Sea of Cortez. The wet, interactive exhibit gives kids a chance to control the movement of water and learn about the river and its inhabitants. The exhibit is part of the overall aquarium experience with jellyfish, seahorses and hundreds more fish in an environment friendly for little ones and perfect for picture taking.

Ongoing: Free Fidget Fest

Rocket Fizz Scottsdale, a soda and candy shop, invites kids to a Saturday afternoon with fidget spinner games, contests and prizes. Fidget spinners are available for $4.99-$49.99. Children and adults also will receive complimentary soda and candy tastings.
